Cavity wall insulation acts like a quilt to keep heat in the building. The insulation material is blown into the cavity between the two layers of brick in the external wall. We only supply Energy Saving Trust Recommended products. These are the most energy-efficient available, and have a 25 year guarantee.

Cavity Wall Insulation FAQs
  • How do I know if the house already has cavity wall insulation?

    Houses built within the last ten years or so probably already have cavity wall insulation. Others may well have had it installed. If this is the case, you should have been given a CIGA guarantee when you bought the house, so it’s worth checking the paperwork.

    When we come to do a survey, we will drill a tiny hole in the wall and use a boroscope to inspect what is in the cavity. If we find you already have insulation, don’t worry we won’t try to install a second batch!

  • How much CO2 will I save?

    Around 650kg. That’s more than half a tonne.

  • What happens if my house is semi-detached?

    We put a barrier in the cavity so your neighbour’s house isn’t affected.

  • Does cavity wall insulation stop my house being properly ventilated?

    No. We check the ventilation situation carefully. We seal around ventilators that allow air to circulate below timber floors, so they can’t get blocked. Sometimes we will add extra ventilation. Our technician will talk to you about your vents and advise which ones you no longer need and can close off.

  • How do you know the cavity is fully-filled?

    The insulation will be ineffective if the cavity isn’t full. So we have a five-stage process for making sure there are no gaps.

    • The pattern of holes we use is designed to guarantee a complete fill (and is confirmed as doing so by the British Board of Agreement).
    • Our machinery cuts out when the area around each hole is full.
    • The material flows past the next injection hole.
    • We check the volume of fibre used matches the calculations from the original survey.
    • Our office staff double-check that the survey and installation measurements match.
  • What is the insulation material made from?

    We usually install mineral wool insulation. Mineral wool is a non-metallic, inorganic product made from a mix of raw materials, of which the biggest ingredient is either rock or silica.

  • How green is cavity wall insulation?

    The energy conserved by insulating a house far outweighs the energy used in making the insulation material. Of all the actions you can take as a householder, insulation has the greatest potential for reducing CO2 emissions.
